This 1993 Chambertin Clos de Bèze comes from the Grand Cru's largest owner, and from one of the very first vintages Pierre Damoy made. That makes it a chance to taste the start of a real turnaround in Gevrey. Pierre is the fifth generation. He took over from his uncle Jacques in 1992 and steered the domaine in a completely different direction, putting quality ahead of quantity. He didn't finish modernizing the winery until 2002, so this bottle comes from those early transition years. The family's roots in this vineyard run deep: in 1932 Julien Damoy, Pierre's great-great-grandfather, won approval for the Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze appellation itself. The domaine farms 5.36 of the climat's roughly 15.4 hectares, including some of the domaine's oldest vines, planted in 1920. The vineyard goes back much further than that, to 630, when the monks of the Abbey of Bèze created it. The Damoys call Clos de Bèze their flagship.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast pheasant or squab with a red wine jus; a wild mushroom and truffle risotto; braised beef cheeks in a Burgundy reduction; a mild washed-rind cheese such as Époisses or Langres.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Clos de Bèze profile: dark cherry and black raspberry layered with earth, spice and a savoury, gamey edge that typically deepens into forest floor and leather with bottle age. Usually full-bodied yet graceful, with fine, firm tannins and fresh acidity, finishing long and perfumed. Think Gevrey's power with a silkier, more sensual touch.
