From soils of sandy limestone and variegated Triassic marls, this is classic Trousseau: beautiful fruity red wine, silky and deep, with gorgeous colour. A hint of baking spice on the nose brings to mind autumn, the forest, and tiny, ripe forest berries. A special process called infusion is used: free run juice from carbonic maceration is then poured on top of the grapes to maximize texture and body.

More about Domaine Pignier

On hillsides in Montaigu, Jura, Domaine Pignier has been making wine since the 13th century when Carthusian monks planted the first vines on the Jura's rocky slopes. The Pignier family acquired the estate in 1794 and continue working it today with biodynamic principles. These wines pull Chardonnay, Savagnin, and red varieties into expressions of Alpine intensity and precision. Polaner Selections brings them to America. Jura's most serious voice.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

VineyardThe vines are located in the Val de Sorne gorge on Montaigu's southern slope.OrientationSouth/southeast-facingSoilGravelly-limestone and variegated marlsViticultureVineyards are farmed using biodynamic methods and the estate is Demeter certified. Because Pignier is the only grower in the village of Montaigu, they do not have to worry about the influences (such as chemical treatments) of neighboring domaines. All grapes are hand harvested and yields are kept extremely low.VinificationDe-stemmed and vinified in a combination of larger wood tanks and stainless using natural yeasts.AgingAged 12 months 300-600 gallon neutral barriques. Less than 20 mg/L of total sulfur.
