The Burgundy dynasty behind Le Chambertin makes a crushable natural Alsace white, and it's every bit as charming as that sounds. Domaine Trapet's Alsace estate is run by Andree Trapet, farmed biodynamically, and A Minima is her low-intervention field guide to the region: Sylvaner, Auxerrois, Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling all in one bottle, fermented with next to no added sulfur. The fruit comes largely from the high slopes of Rosenbourg above Riquewihr, and it shows a little wild edge without ever tipping into funk. This is natural wine made with real finesse, not just vibes.

"The 2024 A Minima Blanc is a blend of all the varieties grown here, i.e. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Sylvaner, Chasselas, Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc, with more Gewurz than usual in 2024, as all of it was declassified. The varieties are not co-harvested but are co-fermented and made without any addition of sulfur dioxide. The nose is initially ever so slightly funky, showing slight earthiness, but opens with only the faintest aromatic overtones of Muscat and Gewurztraminer. The palate, however, is pure and clean-cut, with much freshness and surprisingly smooth fluidity, but on a super-svelte body. A very light but bright wine." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Domaine Trapet Pere et Fils

Domaine Trapet is not exactly a new name in Burgundy. They've been growing grapes in Gevrey-Chambertin since the 1800s, and have amazing parcels in all the best vineyards, up to and including Le Chambertin. Back in the day, they sold their best grapes to the likes of Domaine Drouhin and Maison Leroy.

But since the 1960s, they've been bottling their own wines. The style has fluctuated a bit, as styles have varied with the generations. Today the domaine is run by Jean-Louis Trapet, whose style can best be summarized as a laser-like focus on making delicious Pinot Noir.

Here are the technicalities of that: light extraction (a touch of bâtonnage or punching down at the beginning of fermentation, but just remontage—pumping over—after that), very little new oak, and whole-cluster when the grapes are ideally healthy (which is quite often, as the farming is biodynamic).

This sounds like what many of Burgundy's best are doing today. But in one area Trapet departs: while "reductive" wine-making is all the rage (limiting the wine's exposure to oxygen), Trapet likes to make his wines open and accessible from release, including by using as little sulfur as possible in the process. That's how he makes his Pinot Noir so delicious!

A cheese board, or gently spicy takeout: mild Thai green curry, samosas, or anything where its aromatic lift meets a little heat.

Dry and lightly leesy, with white flowers, citrus peel and orchard fruit. Fresh and clean with a whisper of Muscat and Gewurz perfume.
