"A very floral-suffused nose is comprised by elegant and airy red berry, spice and softer earth character. There is both lovely volume and texture to the middle weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the overtly austere, dusty and very firm finale. This is definitely not going to make for especially interesting early drinking so I would strongly advise buying this only with the intent to cellar it for at least the mid-term."

"The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos-Prieur 1er Cru comes from a parcel on deep soils with limestone debris, bought in 1893 by the Trapet family (known as tête de chat due to its shape). It has quite an exuberant bouquet with Morello cherry, strawberry and raspberry scents. It's a little more airy than the Ergot cuvée. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and focused, with pliant tannins, gentle grip and a touch of cracked black pepper toward the finish. This is very fine, but it deserves three or four years in bottle." —Neal Martin

"The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur offers up aromas of orange zest, smoke, cassis and creamy oak, followed by a medium-bodied, fleshy and succulent palate, concluding with a saline finish. The Trapet family has produced an attractive set 2023s. As readers will remember, there have been a host of changes at this address in recent years: in 2020, fully seven hectares of the domaine's holdings were converted both to échalas and to higher trellising stakes and wires, depending on the steepness of the slope. Since then, changes have been rolled out in other parcels too. Given the extent of Trapet's holdings in prime climats, that means that the walk from Morey-Saint-Denis to Gevrey-Chambertin suddenly looks rather different. In the cuverie, winemaking continues to be classical, with important percentages of whole clusters, followed by élevage in ever diminishing percentages of new oak, with foudres joining barrels in the cellar." —William Kelley
