Bodegas CARO is a joint venture between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family, conceived in 1998-1999 with a first vintage in 2000. The name combines CA (Catena) + RO (Rothschild). Since 2003, wines have been vinified in a heritage building with underground cellars dating to 1884. Vineyards span Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valley at 800-1,400 meters elevation. Lafite contributes Cabernet Sauvignon expertise; Catena brings Malbec and high-altitude terroir knowledge. Currently led by Laura Catena and Saskia de Rothschild. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec representing both families' signatures.

"The 2021 Caro blend combines 79% Malbec and 21% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Uco Valley. Half of the wine was aged in barrels, 28% in foudres and the rest in concrete. Delicate purple in hue, it opens with blackberry and cassis aromas, alongside subtle cherry notes and a fine cedar backdrop. Dry and sleek, the palate offers refined juiciness and a long, smooth finish."

"Caro 2021 is a refined, vigorous wine. It delivers cherry, berries such as redcurrants and blackberries and graphite, balanced by a layer of spice and oak. Expansive in the mouth, with a rich, refreshing acidity midway through, it transitions sharply to a savoury finish with fine, polished tannins. A blend of 79% Malbec with 21% Cabernet Sauvignon from three prominent terroirs in the Uco Valley – Paraje Altamira, San Pablo and Gualtallary. Aged for 18 months in barrels from DBR Lafite's Tonnellerie des Domaines in Pauillac, Right now, it’s very pleasant paired with braised red meat."

"An underlying twinge of graphite and fresh acidity helps cut through this ripe version, which boasts concentrated layers of blueberry, acai and mission fig. Subtle details of herbs and licorice swirl around plush tannins and a late hint of cocoa powder. There is, however, a heady, high-toned undercurrent that, though it doesn't overpower the wine or linger, is hard to ignore and keeps this from reaching the outstanding score bracket. This is the best of the five bottles sampled. Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2026. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 5,000 cases made, 100 cases imported."

"Aged 18 months in barrels, this Malbec-based blend has a balanced character and displays notes of mint and thyme on the nose. It has layers of fruit and herbs, with notes of chocolate. Firm tannins and good acidity drive flavors of plum, blackberry, thyme and peppercorn through a delicious finish."
