Domenico Clerico's revived Bussia cru bottling, in a classical vintage. Briccotto is a parcel in Bussia (Monforte) that Clerico had folded into his Nebbiolo-based Arte for years; in 2008 he reintroduced it as a single-vineyard Barolo, bottled only in magnum from that vintage. Clerico, who passed in 2017, was a defining modernist pioneer; longtime collaborator/winemaker Oscar Arrivabene and Clerico's widow Giuliana carry the estate forward. The 2008 vintage is classical Piedmont — structured, perfumed, balanced — and now firmly in its drinking window. Eighteen years on, expect a wine of real depth and textural richness, with the smoke, tar, espresso, and licorice that the Briccotto site delivers in spades, framed by tannins that have softened without losing their grip.

"The 2008 Barolo Briccotto is a wine Clerico hasn't made since 1994. For years, this parcel in Bussia was the backbone of the Nebbiolo-based Arte. With 2008 Clerico is reintroducing the Briccotto, which will only be bottled in magnums. It is a huge, dark wine made to emphasize the depth and textural richness that is possible with Nebbiolo. Smoke, tar, espresso and licorice add complexity on the mid palate and finish. In my view the Briccotto is overly heavy. More importantly, though, it is the wine's early oxidative notes that are of most concern for its longevity. The Briccotto was aged in four new French oak barrels made from staves that had been toasted on the outside rather than inside, and two used French oak barrels." —Antonio Galloni

More about Domenico Clerico

Since 1976, Domenico Clerico has been pulling Barolo from the steep slopes around Monforte d'Alba in Piedmont. His four legendary crus—Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana, Mosconi—sit on limestone soils that demand time and respect. At 21 hectares producing 110,000 bottles yearly, Clerico remains one of Piedmont's most respected voices. These are elegant Barolos, the way serious collectors understand them—structured, age-worthy, built to last decades.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, oxtail ragu over tajarin, grilled lamb, aged Castelmagno. The wine has the depth to handle bigger dishes than most Barolos at this age.

Tasting Profile

Dark, dense, intense. Smoke, tar, espresso, licorice, dark cherry, dried herbs, leather, earth. Real textural richness, tannins softening but present. Classical 2008 depth from a powerful Monforte site.
