A lightly sweet Riesling grown on volcanic rock, with the better part of two decades in bottle, and from a vintage that gave it the acidity to last that long. Felsentürmchen means "small rock tower." The grapes come from the steep parcels around that outcrop in the middle of the Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg, and the little tower is the symbol you'll find on Dönnhoff's Felsenberg labels. The soil is red volcanic hard rock, porphyry and melaphyr, which gives the wine its smoky minerality. Cornelius Dönnhoff calls it one of the hardest vineyards to work: it's so steep there's nothing to hold you up but the rocks. In Germany, 2007 opened with a hot April and record-early flowering, then a cool summer slowed things down and a long, fine autumn finished the ripening. That left the Prädikat wines with real acidity under their sweetness. In an off-dry Spätlese, that acidity is what carries the wine through years in the cellar, and it's why a mature Dönnhoff like this one is such a pleasure to open now. Serve chilled.

"Donnhoff's 2007 Riesling Spatlese Felsenturmchen once again reflects a particular (cooler, stonier) portion of the Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg high up and well back from the Nahe. Gentian, red currant, citrus oils, and a whiff of smoke in the nose usher in a rich, sappy, subtly creamy yet tremendously refreshing palate in which tropical mango and citrus meet Northern European red currant. A lick of salt adds invigoration to the long finish. This misses the dazzling complexity and subtlety of the Krotenpfuhl or the ethereal florality of the Kirschheck, but it is built to last, and over the next two decades I am sure there will be times when it overtakes them not to mention overwhelms those lucky enough to have cellared some with its beauty." —David Schildknecht

"Sweet and finely fresh and very pure. Freshness is so subtle and elegant that you almost overlook it but it gives lovely structure and a fine long finish."

Wine Spectator

"Aromas of tropical fruit, apple and hot stones. On the palate, it's all mineral, with a savory, saline character and juicy texture. Fine balance and length, though more subtle on the finish than on the attack."

More about Donnhoff

If you love Riesling, you know the name Dönnhoff. If you don't love Riesling-- yet-- Dönnhoff will teach you why the grape inspires such passion.

Dönnhoff is the greatest estate in the Nahe and one of the best in all of Germany. The family has had four generations to dive deep into their terroir and perfect their winemaking. Their top wines are long-lived and collectible.

That terroir is, of course, key. The Nahe has the most varied soils (including, especially, different kinds of volcanic soil) of any German region, as well as a climate that ranges from very cold high-elevation sites to pockets of Mediterranean warmth. This gives Dönnhoff a painter’s palette of flavors and textures from which to craft a perfect wine.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai larb or green papaya salad; crispy pork belly with a sweet-sour glaze; hot-smoked trout with horseradish cream; Alsatian tarte flambée; Sichuan dry-fried green beans; aged Comté or Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Nahe Spätlese profile: ripe peach, apricot and citrus, plus the smoky, flinty minerality that volcanic soils typically give. Medium-bodied and gently sweet, it is kept in check by racy acidity, so it comes across as elegant rather than sugary. With bottle age, wines like this usually pick up honey, petrol and dried-fruit notes, finishing long, stony and fresh.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
