An off-dry Spätlese from Dönnhoff's own riverside monopole, in a cool and classic vintage, with well over fifteen years in bottle. This is the stage of life these wines are made for. Oberhäuser Brücke is just over a hectare of vines right on the Nahe, named for the Luitpold Bridge that crosses the river at Oberhausen towards Niederhausen. The river keeps temperatures even, and the big swing between warm days and cool nights means Brücke often ripens even later than the celebrated Hermannshöhle, on grey slate covered with loess and loam. Cornelius Dönnhoff puts the difference between his sites this way: if Kirschheck is like watching a movie, Brücke is like reading a book, with a richer, deeper texture. We count 2008 among Dönnhoff's cooler vintages, the kind that produce what are now seen as classic cool-climate wines, and the family's top bottlings are known for living a long time. It's a chance to taste a cool-year Brücke with bottle age without having had to cellar it yourself. Serve chilled.

Robert Parker

"Fresh red raspberry, green tea, and thyme in the rather restrained nose of Donnhoff's 2008 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese lead into a creamily-textured yet at the same time both palpably dense and vivaciously citric and tart berry palate, setting up a dynamic interplay with herbal, bitter-sweet citrus oil, and somehow crystalline as well as stony and alkaline mineral skeins. You could easily get lost in this wine. But I would advise returning to it repeatedly over the next 20 or more years." —David Schildknecht

"Creamy, quite explosively mineral on the nose. Lovely purity and history in this wine. So communicative. Everything in balance. Just wonderful stuff. Not that sweet. You're not really conscious of the sugar level because it just seems to be in balance."

"Cool and refreshing, like a gust of fresh air on a hot day. Passion fruit, pear, quince and grapefruit notes are interspersed with the vibrant structure. There's a fine aftertaste of fresh orchard fruit and mineral. Drink now through 2021."

More about Donnhoff

If you love Riesling, you know the name Dönnhoff. If you don't love Riesling-- yet-- Dönnhoff will teach you why the grape inspires such passion.

Dönnhoff is the greatest estate in the Nahe and one of the best in all of Germany. The family has had four generations to dive deep into their terroir and perfect their winemaking. Their top wines are long-lived and collectible.

That terroir is, of course, key. The Nahe has the most varied soils (including, especially, different kinds of volcanic soil) of any German region, as well as a climate that ranges from very cold high-elevation sites to pockets of Mediterranean warmth. This gives Dönnhoff a painter’s palette of flavors and textures from which to craft a perfect wine.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Crispy pork belly with roasted apples, Thai larb or a green curry, smoked trout on rye with horseradish cream, roast duck with a cherry glaze, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Nahe Spätlese profile: ripe peach, apricot and citrus with a smoky, slate-driven minerality, and gentle sweetness balanced by bright, racy acidity. Brücke typically has a richer, deeper texture than many Nahe sites. With bottle age, wines in this style tend to pick up notes of honey, dried fruit and petrol, and the finish is long and off-dry.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
