A sweet Riesling Auslese from the Nahe's greatest vineyard, made in 2007, the year Cornelius Dönnhoff joined his father Helmut at the winery. Hermannshöhle has been the region's top-ranked site for more than a century, and it's still the benchmark every other Nahe vineyard gets measured against. The slope faces due south at a steep 40 to 60 percent gradient, and its blackish-grey slate is mixed with volcanic rock, porphyry and limestone. The name has a good story too: "Höhle" refers to a small mine cut into the middle of the hillside, and "Hermann" is thought to come from Hermes, which probably points to an ancient place of worship on the site. The 2007 growing season started with a hot April and record-early flowering, then a cool summer slowed things down and a long, fine autumn finished the ripening. That left Germany's sweet wines with real acidity under the sugar, and that acidity is what carries an Auslese through years in the cellar. This is a chance to taste what that site gave in a vintage built for aging. Serve chilled.

Antonio Galloni

"Rich golden yellow. Magnificent aromas of yellow plum, honeysuckle and cinnamon complemented by a waft of smoky botrytis. Musky pineapple jam and elevated minerality animate the palate. The very long, dense and juicy finish is marked by a refined spiciness." —Joel B. Payne

Robert Parker

95 points

"Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese leads with an unusually floral aromatic display, and the palate impression is so honeyed you'd think it were Bienenauslese (selected by bees). There is remarkable density here, with site-typical layering of flowers, orchard fruits, citrus, berries, along with smoky, peat-like, stony mineral suggestions that become more prominent as the wine takes on air. The finish is almost luxuriantly rich by Hermannshohle standards. But I am sure this wine will find more to say with time and not fall silent for 30 years or more." —David Schildknecht

More about Donnhoff

If you love Riesling, you know the name Dönnhoff. If you don't love Riesling-- yet-- Dönnhoff will teach you why the grape inspires such passion.

Dönnhoff is the greatest estate in the Nahe and one of the best in all of Germany. The family has had four generations to dive deep into their terroir and perfect their winemaking. Their top wines are long-lived and collectible.

That terroir is, of course, key. The Nahe has the most varied soils (including, especially, different kinds of volcanic soil) of any German region, as well as a climate that ranges from very cold high-elevation sites to pockets of Mediterranean warmth. This gives Dönnhoff a painter’s palette of flavors and textures from which to craft a perfect wine.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Foie gras torchon with toasted brioche; Roquefort or Stilton with walnuts; apple tarte tatin; roast duck with a peach or apricot glaze; mildly spicy Thai dishes like green papaya salad with grilled pork.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Nahe Auslese profile: ripe peach, apricot and honeyed citrus over a smoky, slatey minerality. The palate is typically lush and sweet but light on its feet, with vibrant Riesling acidity keeping the sugar in check, and a long, juicy finish. Wines in this style are built to age, gaining notes of honey and petrol with time in bottle.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
