This is the Dunn, the flagship that made the name. Randy Dunn planted on Howell Mountain in 1978 and helped turn it into an official AVA, and his mountain Cabernet remains a touchstone of classic, cellar-worthy Napa. The vineyards sit above 1,400 feet, where cool breezes tempered even the heat spikes of 2022, drawn entirely from the family's five estate parcels. Expect firm, graphite-led mountain structure framing rich fruit, with beams of tannin built for the long haul. Buy it, forget it in the cellar, and be rewarded years from now.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain offers a striking interplay of vintage 2022 ripeness and Howell Mountain savoriness. Dried herbs, menthol, licorice, incense and blood orange stain the palate up front before beams of tannin punctuate the harmonious, expressive finish. The 2022 is exotic and unusually lush, but also full of character. I look forward to seeing how this ages. The Howell Mountain is clearly among the finest wines of the year." —Antonio Galloni

More about Dunn Vineyards

Dunn's status as a benchmark Napa producer dates back to 1978, when Randy and Lori Dunn purchased a 14-acre parcel in Angwin on Howell Mountain, planted to five acres of Cabernet. When Howell Mountain became an American Viticultural Area in 1983, Randy was one of the growers leading the way. The estate is still, happily, family-run, now in its third generation as young Alex (Randy's grandson) joins second-generation Kristiana and Mike Dunn. As much as Napa has changed since the '70s, some things haven't, and Dunn remains one of the touchstones of classic Napa.
