Carmenère is Chile's signature grape, and this is the serious, grown-up version of it — 100% Carmenère from the Echeverría family's own vines, spicy and velvety rather than jammy. The family established their current vineyards and winery outside Molina in the Curicó Valley in 1923, and their 80 hectares sit on French pre-phylloxera rootstocks, a rarity almost anywhere else in the wine world. They'd been growing grapes in Chile since 1740 — the family came over from the Basque hamlet of Amezqueta in the 1750s — but the winery only pivoted from bulk wine to serious bottlings in 1990, one of the first Chilean boutique producers to do so. If you know Echeverría from the naturally made No Es Pituko bottles, this is the other side of the house: Roberto Echeverría has run winemaking since 2001, and these are made conventionally, with an eye on consistency. For what comparable Cabernet costs from more fashionable addresses, the quality here is hard to argue with.
