Rouget's Echezeaux comes from three parcels - Les Treux, Les Cruots (also known as Vignes Blanches), and Clos Saint-Denis - blended into one of the Cote de Nuits' most serious Grand Crus. Emmanuel learned the trade from his uncle Henri Jayer starting in 1976; today his sons Nicolas and Guillaume carry that lineage forward. The winemaking is textbook Jayer school: low yields, full destemming, cool pre-ferment maceration, aging in carefully chosen barrels (Francois Freres leads the way, joined by Taransaud and Cavin). The 2023 is built for the cellar - all the perfume and depth Echezeaux can offer, anchored by a firm, serious tannin spine that the family is famous for. This is patient wine for patient drinkers. Five years minimum, ideally more.

Burghound

"Firm reduction and wood reveal nothing save for a touch of spice. As is usually the case, there is better volume but less finesse to the medium-bodied favors that are succulent, even fleshy, yet possess excellent power on the serious, structured and beautifully long finale. This is a big wine, both in the context of what is typical for Echézeaux but also in terms of the 2023 vintage." —Allen Meadows

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast saddle of venison, truffled poularde, aged ribeye, or duck with morels. The Grand Cru depth calls for special-occasion proteins; the tannin spine rewards rich preparations.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and concentrated. Black cherry, dark plum, exotic spice, and forest floor. Firm tannins reach all the way to the teeth, with a long, mineral finish. Built for the long haul.
