Savigny-les-Beaune from Emmanuel Rouget is one of those bottles that quietly punches above its village-tier appellation. The domaine - run today by Rouget's sons Nicolas and Guillaume, who took the reins in 2011 - traces its style directly back to Henri Jayer, the legendary uncle who took Emmanuel under his wing in 1976. That means low yields, careful destemming, gentle cool pre-ferment maceration, and aging in classic Burgundian barrels. The 2023 from Savigny gives you all the lift and red-fruited charm of the appellation, with the extra refinement that comes from Rouget's painstaking cellar work. A village wine that thinks like a 1er Cru. Drink over the next several years.

More about Emmanuel Rouget

Few domaines carry as much Burgundy legend as Emmanuel Rouget's. He is the nephew and protégé of Henri Jayer, and he inherited Jayer's vines in Cros Parantoux, the Vosne-Romanée premier cru Jayer famously replanted in the 1950s after decades of neglect.

Rouget (Jayer's nephew by marriage) worked at his uncle's side for years. He set up his own cellar in Flagey-Échezeaux in 1985, and Jayer's vineyards passed to him formally in 1996. Jayer's last vintage under his own name was 2001. The next generation is now in charge: Nicolas has run the vineyards since 2008, and Guillaume has made the wine since the 2011 vintage.

Besides Cros Parantoux, the domaine has holdings in Échezeaux grand cru, Vosne-Romanée village and premier cru Beaux Monts, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Savigny-lès-Beaune and a white Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. The winemaking follows the Jayer playbook: low yields, fully destemmed fruit, a cool soak before fermentation and patient time in barrel. The reds are deep, silky and perfumed, and the top wines need years in the cellar. The Savigny and Hautes-Côtes are the gentlest way into the house style.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Coq au vin, roast pork loin, mushroom tart, duck confit, or a board of soft-rind cheeses. Equally at home with a midweek roast chicken as with a holiday goose.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied with bright red cherry, raspberry, and a savory underbrush note. Silky tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, perfumed finish. Drinking well now with a few years of upside.
