There may be no more storied 1er Cru in Burgundy than Cros-Parantoux. The vineyard was a Jerusalem artichoke patch during World War II until Henri Jayer began clearing and replanting it in 1945 - famously dynamiting the bedrock to make holes for the vines. Jayer didn't bottle it under its own name until 1978. When he retired in 2001 his entire holding - 0.72 of the vineyard's total 1.0 hectares - passed to his nephew Emmanuel Rouget, whom Jayer had been mentoring since 1976. Today Rouget's sons Nicolas and Guillaume carry the torch. The 2023 channels that legendary terroir: profound depth, exotic spice, and the kind of tension that announces a wine living on a different plane. A pilgrimage bottle. Cellar it.

"An exuberantly fresh and spicy nose is comprised mostly of the essence of red cherry, soy, hoisin, exotic tea and an unusual if attractive hint of citrus, particularly orange peel. The racy, delicious and delineated medium weight flavors are not especially dense but they are super-sleek and built on their minerality, all wrapped in a strikingly long, well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. Like the VRBM, this is very classy juice." —Allen Meadows

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Treat with reverence: roast woodcock or partridge, truffled risotto, aged Beaufort, or a perfectly cooked rib of beef. The wine doesn't need help - simple, exceptional ingredients suffice.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and profound. Black cherry, exotic spice, rose petal, woodsmoke, and crushed rock. Firm, finely-knit tannins; vibrating tension; a finish that seems to go on forever.
