Here's a chance to drink an off-dry Riesling that has already done its waiting: a 2005 Spätlese from the Halenberg, Emrich-Schönleber's flagship vineyard, from a vintage the family remembers for both power and elegance. The Halenberg in Monzingen is a south-facing slope as steep as 70% and planted only to Riesling. Its stony blue slate and quartzite make the vines struggle, which keeps the berries small and gives the fruit a particularly fine aroma. In 2005 a dry summer gave naturally concentrated grapes, while evaporation shrank the crop. Picking started cautiously on 20 October in beautifully dry weather. They've said they never had a better year for nobly sweet wines, and that the acidity in their 2005s landed right where they wanted it. Twenty years in the bottle is exactly the kind of patience Spätlese is built for, and it's more fun to open one that's already got there than to start the clock yourself.

"Pale golden yellow.Subtle aromas of white peach, wild herbs and lemon zest. The creamy apricot fruit washes over the palate, supported by a salty minerality that lends balance.Clear, precise and long on the finish." —Joel B. Payne

"Passion fruit, pineapple and mineral notes converge in this racy white. Has verve and detail, with a nice juicy finish. Tastes like a true spätlese."

More about Emrich-Schonleber

Weingut Emrich-Schönleber sits in Monzingen in the Nahe, where the Schönleber family's viticultural roots go back to the 18th century. Since 1997, they've focused entirely on single-vineyard Rieslings from their most prized parcels, including the storied Monzinger Halenberg. These are Rieslings that prove German terroir is anything but simple.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Crispy pork belly with roasted apples; duck breast with an orange or plum glaze; Sichuan twice-cooked pork or mapo tofu; smoked trout with horseradish cream; a wedge of aged Comté or Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Halenberg profile: ripe grapefruit and tropical fruit over a salty, slate-driven minerality, with a gentle touch of sweetness balanced by bright, racy acidity. Spätlese Riesling with bottle age typically adds honeyed and petrol-like notes. Think a little richer and stonier than a Mosel Spätlese, finishing long, off-dry and clean.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
