What is this wine?
Emrich-Schönleber is one of the greatest estates of the Nahe, producing Rieslings of crystalline precision. Halenberg is their flagship vineyard, a Grosses Gewächs site of blue slate and quartzite soils that produces some of Germany’s most powerful and ageworthy dry Rieslings. Alongside Frühlingsplätzchen, it forms the heart of the estate’s reputation, with Halenberg typically showing more concentration and intensity.

Why get this wine?
This is grand cru Riesling at its peak: layered, mineral, and built to last. Emrich-Schönleber’s Halenberg GG regularly ranks among Germany’s finest dry Rieslings, yet it remains less expensive than many Mosel or Rheingau icons. For collectors and serious Riesling lovers, this bottling is a benchmark—combining site, producer, and vintage pedigree.

What does this wine taste like?
Structured and concentrated, with ripe citrus, stone fruit, and crushed herbs, underpinned by smoky, flinty minerality. The palate is taut and powerful, with electric acidity and immense length. A wine of depth, precision, and tension.

When should you drink this wine?
Already thrilling in its youthful intensity, but best cellared 7–20 years for full complexity. Ideal with fine seafood, roasted poultry, or simply savored as a meditative wine.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 95
"The 2024 Riesling Monzinger Halenberg Grosses Gewächs is from a site of Devonian slate. It opens with a smooth, creamy lemon tone. The palate has a beautiful roundness, with the heat of citrus that provides such a cooling, soothing energy that sinks deep into the soil. A lovely evenness defines this, despite all the brightness and stoniness." -Anne Krebiehl, MW

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
