Brunate is the cru Barolo lovers argue about in the best way—a warm, south-facing amphitheater straddling La Morra and Barolo that gives Nebbiolo unusual depth and polish. The Boglietti brothers farm a tiny slice of it, and this 2004 has had two decades to trade its youthful grip for something more open and layered. It comes from the estate's earlier, more sleek and modern-leaning era, so expect a Barolo with reach rather than austerity. "Boglietti's 2004 Barolo Vigna delle Brunate is terrific. It too is a big, weighty Barolo, yet the fruit is more layered than the Case Nere and the tannins have an additional degree of fineness. Perfumed black cherries, menthol, spices and sweet toasted oak emerge from this concentrated, richly-textured wine. With time in the glass the wine gains clarity and focus, becoming even more compelling. This is a great effort from Enzo Boglietti." —Antonio Galloni
