Classically-built Brunello from a tiny estate, in what turned out to be one of the great recent vintages in Montalcino. Enzo Tiezzi spent years directing agronomy and winemaking for some of Brunello's most famous names before striking out on his own, assembling four small farms in two locations — Poggio Cerrino and Cigaleta on the northern slopes, Soccorso and San Carlo just outside the town's medieval walls — about ten hectares in all. Poggio Cerrino comes from the Cerrino and Cigaleta vineyards, about three kilometers northeast of Montalcino at 350 meters, on sandy clay laced with galestro schist, from vines averaging 45 years old. The winemaking is entirely traditional: spontaneous fermentation and a 21-day maceration in open-top upright oak fermenters, then just under four years in large Slavonian casks of 10 to 40 hectoliters and six months in bottle before release. Total production runs around 900 cases. This is Brunello built to last rather than to impress immediately, so decant it an hour ahead if you are opening one now, or put it away for a decade.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragu over pappardelle, roast lamb with rosemary, or aged pecorino toscano. It wants something with real char or long braising.

Tasting Profile

Sour cherry and dried red fruit with crushed rock, savory herbs, olive and clove. Full-bodied but not heavy, with cool acidity, firm fine-grained tannins and a long, earthy finish. Good now with air, better in five to ten years.
