Mâcon-Vergisson at its most precise. Eric Forest farms 4.8 hectares of old vines around Vergisson, including parcels on the dramatic limestone rock that gives this cuvée its name. Sur la Roche is just what it sounds like — Chardonnay grown on the bony, sun-warmed limestone outcrop above the village — and the result punches well above its Mâcon-Villages status. There's the lemon-crystal cut and chalk-dust mineral you'd expect from Forest, but with the friendly, juicy mid-palate of a great Mâconnais white: poached pear, salted almond, a whiff of orchard blossom. Forest belongs to the new wave of Mâconnais growers producing whites with Côte d'Or-level precision at very fair Mâcon prices. A weeknight ringer that can hold its own at a serious table.
