A Rioja Crianza from one named vineyard rather than a blend of whatever the cellar had, which is rarer at this level than you would think. Finca La Valentina sits at 580 meters on clay-limestone soils, planted in 1985, high enough to keep acidity intact in a warm region. The Montana family has been growing in Rioja Alta and Alavesa since the trade's modern beginnings in the late 19th century, with the business formalized by Roman Montana in 1920 and now run by his grandson Oscar. The blend is 97% Tempranillo with 3% Graciano for lift, hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel and concrete, then aged twelve months in a mix of American and French oak followed by six months in bottle. Classically proportioned Rioja that drinks beautifully young.
