A magnum of single-parcel Meunier from the top of the Cuisles hill, where the green clay and limestone marl run only about half a meter deep over chalk and the forty-year-old vines have to work for everything. Les Fortes Terres is the site Cedric Mousse reserves for his most structured wine, fermented and aged in stainless steel with malolactic completed, then given four years on the lees before disgorgement at the end of 2023. It went into the heavy, distinctive bottle of the Club Tresors des Champagne, the growers' association whose members submit a top cuvee for blind peer approval; Mousse joined in 2005 with the first 100% Meunier ever accepted by the club, and every vintage he has submitted since has been passed. In magnum the wine is only beginning to open, and it has a long road ahead.

Robert Parker

"The 2019 Blanc de Noirs Les Fortes Terres originates from one of the estate’s steepest vineyards in Cuisles, where shallow soils—merely 50 centimeters of clay atop chalk—produce small, concentrated berries. Disgorged in December 2023, this cuvée contains a combined 5.75 grams per liter of dosage and residual sugar, lending it a more charming character. It leaps from the glass with aromas of peach, tangerine zest, pear and early-blooming white blossoms. On the palate, it is full-bodied, concentrated and textural, with a sweet, succulent fruit core balanced by vibrant acidity, culminating in a long, enveloping finish accented by a saline nuance. Notably, it no longer bears the Special Club designation, as Cédric Moussé has chosen to leave the association." —Kristaps Karklins

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
