The Montecillo vineyard was first planted in 1860, making it one of California's most historic sites — and Far Mountain dry-farms it organically on red, rocky volcanic soils at the northern end of the Mayacamas. That basalt gives the wine its signature: iron, graphite, and a rocky tannin structure that reads the geology straight off the hillside. Rodrigo Soto and Mai Errazuriz make this in a high-elevation, cool-climate style that prizes precision over power. This is a Cabernet to take seriously. Decant it now or tuck it away for the better part of a decade.

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is a new wine in this range. The pedigree here is immediately, unmistakably present. Complex and dynamic in the glass, with tons of nuance, the 2022 impresses with its layers of complexity, one of the biggest things that is missing from so many wines in this vintage. Crushed flowers, chalk, mint, orange peel and red-toned fruit all open in the glass. "Beautiful forest aromas beguile from the Far Mountain Montecillo Cabernet, perched nearly 2,000 ft (600m) along the ridge that divides the Napa and Sonoma appellations. Bergamot and fir tips, wild blue alpine berries, a touch of forest floor, and a bassline of gorgeous sweet violets. The palate is subtle and beautifully integrated. Sweet huckleberries, pine sap, mint leaves, and a dash of wild alpine herbs. This is a Cabernet of place, refinement and elegance."
