Flavio Roddolo's wines are introverted, brooding and intense in their youth, and they need patience before they show their full personality. This 2007 Barolo has had nearly two decades of it. Roddolo is a true artisan grower: six hectares on the Bricco Appiani hill just outside Monforte d'Alba, with vines from 15 to 70 years old on calcareous clay and no chemical treatments in forty years. In the cellar he uses only indigenous yeasts, and nothing is fined or filtered. The whole estate makes about 20,000 bottles a year, so this isn't a trophy Barolo with a marketing budget behind it. It's traditional Nebbiolo from a farmer. If you love Barolo but don't have the cellar or the patience, this bottle has already done the waiting for you.

More about Flavio Roddolo

Flavio Roddolo is a legend in Monforte d'Alba, one of the last remaining truly genuine winemakers in Piedmont. His six hectares haven't been chemically treated in 40 years. He uses only indigenous yeasts, doesn't clarify or filter, and ages in cement and old oak. He bottles tiny quantities only when he feels they're ready. The world is watching to see what happens next.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and shaved truffle; beef braised in Barolo with polenta; roast pheasant or guinea fowl with porcini; aged Castelmagno or Raschera.

Tasting Profile

Expect traditional Monforte d'Alba Barolo in Roddolo's brooding, intense house style: dark cherry, violets, tar and dried herbs over a full body, high acidity and firm, grippy Nebbiolo tannins. With bottle age, classic Barolo typically softens toward leather, truffle and dried fruit, finishing dry, long and savoury.
