This is a 1998 Barolo, more than a quarter-century old, from a grower whose wines are made for exactly that kind of wait. Flavio Roddolo's wines are introverted, brooding and intense by nature, and they need patience before they show their full personality. That's why a bottle with this much time behind it is worth having. Roddolo farms just six hectares on the Bricco Appiani hill outside Monforte d'Alba. His vines are 15 to 70 years old, grow on calcareous clay and haven't been treated with chemicals in forty years. Everything ferments on indigenous yeasts and goes into bottle unfined and unfiltered. The whole estate makes only about 20,000 bottles a year, and the Barolo Ravera shares that total with his Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo d'Alba and Langhe Rosso. This isn't a trophy Barolo. It's for people who want traditional Nebbiolo made by a farmer, not a brand.

More about Flavio Roddolo

Flavio Roddolo is a legend in Monforte d'Alba, one of the last remaining truly genuine winemakers in Piedmont. His six hectares haven't been chemically treated in 40 years. He uses only indigenous yeasts, doesn't clarify or filter, and ages in cement and old oak. He bottles tiny quantities only when he feels they're ready. The world is watching to see what happens next.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle, brasato al Barolo with polenta, or roast guinea fowl with porcini. A wedge of aged Castelmagno makes a fine finish.

Tasting Profile

Expect traditional Monforte Barolo in an introverted, brooding style: dried cherry, violet, tar and earthy, savoury notes, with leather and truffle emerging as the wine matures. Typically, firm, fine-grained Nebbiolo tannins and lively acidity carry a medium-full body to a long, dry, slightly austere finish. It's built for patience, not early charm.
