A way into Pauillac's gravel without the wait: this is the second wine of Chateau Pedesclaux, a fifth growth in the 1855 classification, drawn from the same vineyard as the Grand Vin but built to be drunk sooner. Jacky Lorenzetti bought the estate in 2009 and rebuilt it from the ground up, with a gravity-fed cellar, plot-by-plot vinification and organic certification across the fifty-odd hectares. The 2022 leans Merlot, roughly half the blend, with the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Petit Verdot, and it spends a year in used French oak rather than new, so the fruit and the Pauillac savor come through instead of vanilla. That summer was hot and very dry in Bordeaux, and yet the wines came in with unexpected freshness. Drink it over the next eight years or so; an hour in a decanter helps it along now.
