The Nada family have farmed Cascina Rombone since 1921, and the winery is literally built on the vineyard. Rombone remains the beating heart of the estate and the most powerful wine they make. Treiso sits high and cool in Barbaresco, and this site concentrates everything the commune is known for: intense spice, deep minerality, and a richness that is genuinely unusual in a zone better known for perfume. Deep garnet, harmonious young, and built for the very long haul. 2016 was a landmark year in Piedmont and it gave Rombone both the fruit and the structure to go the distance. Decant it, or leave it alone for another decade. Either way, do not rush it.

"The 2016 Barbaresco Rombone is the most finessed Rombone I have tasted in twenty years of visiting the property. A reduction of time in barrique in favor of cask seems to release the wine's aromatic intensity while giving a more elegant, mid-weight Rombone with less overt unctuousness and much more Nebbiolo character. Kirsch, blood orange, mint, chalk and sage are some of the many notes that inform this utterly beguiling, alluring Barbaresco. In short, this is what Treiso is all about. What a wine!" —Antonio Galloni

"This is pure and alluring for its aromas of rose, strawberry and cherry, with eucalyptus and earth notes chiming in as this tightens up on the compact finish. The lasting impression is ripe fruit, so be patient. Best from 2023 through 2042. 333 cases made, 100 cases imported."

More about Fiorenzo Nada

Treiso is the high, cool corner of Barbaresco, and Nada Fiorenzo is one of the best reasons to pay attention to it: a small family estate making Barbaresco with perfume, fine tannins and real staying power.

The story starts in 1921, when Carlo Nada bought the Rombone farm in Treiso and sold his wine unbottled to local restaurants. His son Fiorenzo sold grapes instead. It was Fiorenzo's son Bruno who left a teaching career in Alba to build a winery, releasing the first bottles under his father's name in 1982. Bruno's son Danilo now leads the estate, which remains a small, family-run one.

The Nadas farm without herbicides, use cover crops, harvest by hand and vinify each vineyard separately, aging in a mix of large Slavonian oak casks and smaller barrels. The Barbarescos are the heart of the range. Rombone, the limestone and clay vineyard around the winery, is the most powerful. Manzola, on sandier ground, is the most perfumed. Montaribaldi comes from the commune of Barbaresco itself. A Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Seifile, a Barbera-Nebbiolo blend from vines planted in 1964, round things out.
