Fonseca 1985 is a celebrated vintage from one of Port's most revered houses, and at forty years old it's a real treat. Vintage Port is bottled young and built to evolve for decades, and this one has had the time to fully unwind. Once tight, dense and minty, it's now layered, perfumed and savory, with the breed and balance that are Fonseca's signature. This is a mature, back-vintage bottle, so stand it upright and decant carefully off the substantial sediment. Pour modest glasses after dinner and let it bloom.

Robert Parker

"The 1985 Fonseca is still youthful in appearance with hardly any ageing on the rim. The nose offers kirsch, sloes and Christmas cake. With time, there are subtle notes of dried fig and dates beginning to emerge and add to the complexity. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced on the supple, rounded entry. It is not quite as complex as the aromatics, with dates and dried fig, the finish mellow and refined. It is very elegant for a Fonseca, weighty but supremely well focused. This is a fabulous Fonseca that is ready to drink now, but will age for another 30 or 40 years." —Neal Martin

"Deep garnet colour. Leathery ripeness dominates the nose, which is smoky and lightly gamey. The fruit still has excellent presence on both nose and palate, but the spice-box notes now overtake the fresher fruit tones. The sweetness is perfectly measured, rounding the edges and softening the tannins. More leather, clove and nutmeg linger on a very long finish. Ready, but with a long life ahead."

"The best wine from a difficult decade for Port. Still youthful on the nose; gently perfumed floral character. Sweet, fleshy palate with gentle, berry fruit backed by peppery tannic grip. Dry finish."

Wine Spectator

"Very dark and youthful ruby-purple. Very intense aromas of blackberry and black licorice. Full-bodied and lightly sweet, with chewy tannins and a rich licorice, blackberry undertone. Still tight."

More about Fonseca

Fonseca Guimaraens has been making Port since 1815, and their Bin 27 is the best-selling Port in America and still the reference standard for Ruby Reserve. They control three Quintas in the Douro Valley, each contributing to the house's distinctive dry-fruit style. Whether it's a young Bin 27 or aged tawny, Fonseca Port is reliable, elegant, and built for actual drinking.

Tasting Profile

Sweet, mellowed by age, medium to full bodied. Dried berry, fig, mint, leather and walnut. Tannins largely resolved into a soft, complex, long finish. A mature wine showing its age beautifully.
