When most of the great Port houses declared the 1991 vintage, Fonseca famously held back and declared 1992 instead, a bold call that produced one of the classic modern Vintage Ports. More than three decades on, this is exactly what a great declared vintage should be: opaque, opulent, and deeply complex, built on Fonseca's signature voluptuous fruit and tannic grip from foot-trodden grapes in stone lagares. It's fully mature now yet still carries structure to hold for years to come. Decant it carefully off its heavy sediment and pour after dinner. A benchmark bottle from one of the Douro's legendary names.

Robert Parker

97 points

"Fonseca has scored in both the 1991 and 1992 vintages. The 1992 is a majestic young port that should ultimately rival, perhaps even surpass this house's most recent great efforts (1985, 1977, 1970, 1963). This colossal vintage port reveals a nearly opaque black/purple color, and an explosive nose of jammy black fruits, licorice, chocolate, and spices. Extremely full-bodied and unctuously-textured, this multi-layered, enormously-endowed port reveals a finish that lasts for over a minute. It is a magnificent port that will age well for 30-40 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Intensely fruity on the nose, with lots of blackberry and violet. Full-bodied and lightly sweet, with slightly astringent tannins and a medium finish. Silky. Still very tight. Needs time."

More about Fonseca

Fonseca Guimaraens has been making Port since 1815, and their Bin 27 is the best-selling Port in America and still the reference standard for Ruby Reserve. They control three Quintas in the Douro Valley, each contributing to the house's distinctive dry-fruit style. Whether it's a young Bin 27 or aged tawny, Fonseca Port is reliable, elegant, and built for actual drinking.
