Fonseca 1997 comes from a widely admired declared vintage, made in the rich, voluptuous style that has made this house famous. Vintage Port is produced only in the best years, bottled young and meant to age for decades. Nearly thirty years on, this is hitting a lovely stride, still mouthfilling and concentrated but starting to show secondary complexity. Stand it upright, then decant off the sediment before serving. Pour it after dinner and let it open up in the glass.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Full saturated ruby. Inky, brooding aromas of syrupy black fruits and violet. Dense, thick and tactile, with superb depth of flavor and compelling juicy sweetness. Finishes with powerful tannins and superb grip. Not as flamboyantly aromatic as this wine normally is in its youth, but structured for long, slow development in bottle." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

93 points

"Somewhat of a lightweight for Fonseca, but undeniably charming, this dark ruby/purple-colored wine offers a floral, exotic, flamboyant bouquet, a sweet, fleshy style, but not a great deal of weight or massiveness. Heady alcohol, sweet tannin, and a velvety texture make for a gorgeous finish. While I would have preferred to have seen more weight, structure, and intensity, this is an outstanding, albeit lighter than normal Fonseca." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Decanter

93 points

"A declaration rather over-shadowed by 1994 and looking good value against its peers. Open, ripe berry fruit aromas come singing from the glass; rich plummy flavours on the palate, ripe and fleshy, wrapped by firm yet ripe tannins that linger on to the finish."

Wine Spectator

91 points

"Shows maturity, with brown bread, melted licorice and espresso notes, carried by a fine-grained structure that allows toffee, toasted sesame and caramel notes to fill in easily on the finish. You can easily drink this now, but the elegance and balance will hold for a bit."

More about Fonseca

Fonseca Guimaraens has been making Port since 1815, and their Bin 27 is the best-selling Port in America and still the reference standard for Ruby Reserve. They control three Quintas in the Douro Valley, each contributing to the house's distinctive dry-fruit style. Whether it's a young Bin 27 or aged tawny, Fonseca Port is reliable, elegant, and built for actual drinking.

Tasting Profile

Sweet and full bodied, with ripe black fruit, plum, chocolate and a floral lift. Tannins still present but softening; rich and mouthfilling with a long, warming finish. Drinking well now.
