Most coffee liqueurs taste like sugar with a vague idea of coffee attached. This one tastes like coffee. Forthave distills in Brooklyn, and Brown is their collaboration with Cafe Integral, built on a single-origin pacamara ambar bean grown by Don Sergio Ortez in Nicaragua and roasted locally. They extract it two ways, a cold-brew steep plus a maceration of the ground beans, over a base of organic Brazilian turbinado sugarcane spirit, then sweeten it with the same sugar. At 24% ABV it lands rich without going cloying: toasted wafer, cacao and a flicker of chili on the nose, brewed coffee and milk chocolate across a creamy palate. Espresso martinis, obviously. But it is just as happy over ice, or poured across vanilla ice cream and left alone.
