Just across the river from Vouvray sits Montlouis-sur-Loire, sharing the same tuffeau bedrock but with sandier soils that lend more finesse than power. Francois Chidaine, one of Chenin Blanc's true icons, farms Les Bournais biodynamically and turns it into a dry white of real precision. There's bright citrus and orchard fruit here, wrapped around a chalky mineral core that gives the wine its lift and energy. It's a fascinating counterpoint to his Vouvray — same grape, same hands, subtly different terroir. Delicious now, with room to grow.

François Chidaine put Montlouis firmly back on the map of world-class Chenin Blancs. After taking over his father's four hectares in 1989, he's expanded to 30 hectares of Chenin and other regional varieties, all farmed organically and biodynamically. He ferments with only indigenous yeasts, no additives. His wines taste pure and express terroir like few Loireloads can.
