‘Bournais – Franc de Pied’ 2022 is a special cuvée from François Chidaine, grown in the Montlouis-sur-Loire appellation, just across the river from Vouvray. The “franc de pied” vines (planted without grafting) offer a textural and aromatic purity that is hard to find, even in great Chenin. These vines are deeply rooted in limestone and clay, giving the wine both lift and length.

The 2022 vintage brings crisp orchard fruit, white flowers, crushed shell, and subtle honeyed notes, but all wrapped in a bone-dry frame, with precise acidity and a saline finish. There's no oak here—just stainless steel and lees aging to enhance texture without distraction.

This is Chenin for purists, but it’s also deeply pleasurable, with the kind of tension and detail that rewards both immediate drinking and a few years of cellar time.

Perfect with goat cheese, oysters, roast poultry, or spring vegetables, this is a wine of rarity and clarity, from a master of the Loire.

Francois Chidaine is based in Montlouis, but has wonderful holdings just across the Loire in Vouvray as well. He is known in France and much of the larger wine world as an incredibly talented and focused farmer and has been practicing organic and biodynamic for many years, and more recently has begun adopting an approach known as “regenerative agriculture”. This practice eschews any tilling and instead grows cover crops of indigenous plants in natural rotation throughout the year . . . promoting biodiversity and helping remove CO2 from the atmosphere.
