A benchmark Barolo from a historic Verduno producer, Fratelli Alessandria's 2016 shows the graceful elegance and nervous energy that define the finest expressions of Nebbiolo. From a complex blend of parcels in the commune, it opens with tight red fruit, cassis, and bitter cherry, unfolding toward mint and white pepper. Still youthful and built to evolve for years, this is a remarkable value for serious Barolo—pure Langhe Nebbiolo at its best.

Antonio Galloni

"Alessandria’s 2016 Barolo is a fabulous choice for readers looking for a wine that won’t break the bank. Freshly cut roses, blood orange, red berry fruit, white pepper, chalk and bright acids all pulse through the 2016. A Barolo of energy and cut, the 2016 needs at least a few years in bottle to soften, but it is so impressive today." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"This is the classic Barolo from Fratelli Alessandria, made with a blend of fruit from various sites in Verduno. (From the 2017 vintage forward, the new name "del Comune di Verduno" will reflect its origins.) The 2016 Barolo opens to tight elegance and a nervous quality that pits red fruit energy over lean fruit weight. The results are graceful, lithe, fragile and lasting. The wine's aromas unfolded slowly and seductively, revealing wild berry, cassis, bitter cherry, toasted almond and blue flower. This is a dreamy wine that promises more beauty as it continues its bottle evolution. An ample 20,000 bottles were produced. This is one of the very best values found anywhere in Barolo." —Monica Larner

"Intercommunal blend with grapes coming from Gramolere, Pisapola, Riva Ricche, Campasso, Rocche dell’Olmo and Reinane. Total skin maceration of 25 days. Aged for 32 months in large oak casks. Cask sample. Lustrous mid ruby. Fine but really subdued. Very pure cherry fruit and racy acidity. Fine, tannic bite on the finish. Captivating."

"Fratelli Alessandria was established in 1870 but traces its roots as a winemaking estate back even further to 1830, making it one of the oldest in the zone. The estate's classic Barolo is dominated by the family’s holdings in Verduno’s lesser-known crus. It is a limpid, exquisite expression characterised by clarity and brightness. Flavours of black raspberry and orange are tinged with spice and underpinned by succulent acidity. The texture is elegant and chalky, culminating in a firm grip."

"Rose, violet, forest berry and wild herb aromas fill the glass on this fragrant red. Firmly structured yet loaded with finesse, the linear palate shows strawberry, red cherry, star anise and menthol set against assertive, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. It’s still youthfully austere but balanced. Drink 2024–2036." —Kerin O'Keefe
