Verduno's legendary Monvigliero hillside made its name through Burlotto, but Fratelli Alessandria is the village's other great reference, and their take on this south-facing grand-cru-in-all-but-name is all clarity, perfume, and poise. This is a fully mature 2006, a classic, powerfully structured Barolo vintage now at twenty years old, its once-firm tannins softened and integrated while the wine holds its backbone. Aged the traditional way in large cask, it shows the red-fruited, rose-scented, transparent-to-site voice that makes Verduno so beloved by collectors. This is Nebbiolo at the point where structure gives way to grace. A resolved, aromatic Barolo ready for the table now.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2006 Barolo Monvigliero offers up freshly cut flowers, red berries and mint in a rich style that brilliantly reconciles a generous expression of fruit with a firm, classic sense of structure. There is so much to admire in the Monvigliero today, but readers should really set aside a few bottles in the deepest corner of their cellars. The elegance and pedigree are first-rate. This is another fabulous wine from Alessandria." —Antonio Galloni

"Very very spicy on the nose – almost resinous and cedary. Savoury and chewy with real character. Earthy vegetable notes – sweetness of roasted beetroot and the tang and intensity of ripe tomatoes – and dusty tannins. Peppery finish."

Decanter

"Vittore Alessandria says his 2006 (along with 2010) has the most substantial polyphenolic structure since 2000. It is certainly dense and compact. Still youthful ruby, it drinks younger than its age. Dried orange blossom underpins aromas of moist soil and smoked spice. Tight, tense tannins loosen up slowly in this linear yet expansive, tactile Barolo. It's minerally with soaring, citrussy acidity and a peppery, balsamic finish. Fantastic now but there's no rush to open it."

"Fratelli Alessandria's flagship Barolo opens with pretty spice nuances followed by cherry, blueberry and loads of buoyant fruit. This is a happy, cheerful wine with a vertical lift and tonic notes of eucalyptus and root beer. The tannins are drying and fine. Drink after 2018."
