Monvigliero, Verduno's most prestigious cru, in the utterly classic 2012 vintage that Flatiron has always loved for sheer drinkability. The 2012s are early drinkers not because they're flashy but because they're so balanced, with fine acidities and poised fruit you simply want to pour now. Alessandria is one of the two great references for this perfumed hillside alongside Burlotto, working traditionally and transparent to site. A dozen-plus years on, this is mature, elegant Barolo at its satiny, lifted best. You can keep it, but it's giving real pleasure today.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2012 Barolo Monvigliero is beautifully layered, silky and expressive in the glass. Like many 2012s, the Monvigliero gives the impression it will drink well relatively early, as the aromatics are a touch forward. The classic Monvigliero texture comes through nicely, while beams of tannin extend the finish. Here, too, the wine is a touch compact. The Alessandria wines have traditionally aged very well. It will be interesting to see how the 2012 Monvigliero fares." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

92 points

"From a warm, less nuanced vintage, the 2012 Barolo Monvigliero maintains its profound sense of natural elegance and finesse. Those are indeed the trademark characteristics of this (single) vineyard in the Verduno township. The bouquet offers a mix of fruity tones, with plenty of blue flowers and mild spice folded within. Ultimately, this is a very graceful wine from a vintage that has produced flatter and more two-dimensional wines, generally speaking." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

17 points

"Verduno. Just mid ruby with a broad, orange-tinged rim. Perfumed and almost heady cherry nose with a spicy edge. Soft cherry fruit on the palate with a hint of fresh mint and firm, stalky tannins which integrate on the finish." —Walter Speller

Wine Spectator

91 points

"Sweet cherry, plum, licorice and tobacco flavors pick up hints of eucalyptus and spice in this luscious, well-balanced red. There are ample tannins, but they are easily matched by sweet fruit on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2032." —Bruce Sanderson

Kerin O'Keefe

92 points

"Subdued aromas of menthol, dark spice and a whiff of leather lead the nose while the full-bodied palate offers mature black cherry, star anise and clove. Tightly wound tannins give it a solid finish." —Kerin O'Keefe
