This is Premier Cru Gevrey-Chambertin from a family domaine that also farms Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze and Mazis-Chambertin, yet top-tier Burgundy collectors still mostly overlook it. That's good news for anyone who just wants to drink great Gevrey. As a rule, the house raises Lavaux St-Jacques alongside its Grand Crus, with a far bigger share of new French oak than its village wines get. Frédéric Esmonin runs the estate with his parents, André and Michele, and the family farms sustainably. They only started selling wine under their own labels in 1988, which helps explain why the name still isn't well known. That makes this a serious Premier Cru at a price that's fair for its pedigree.

Wine Spectator

95 points

"A mix of toasty oak, smoky spices, toffee, sandalwood, green olive, raspberry and cherry aromas and flavors are the hallmarks of this seductive red. It's vibrant and firm, leaving a line of tannins and mineral on the long finish. Best from 2024 through 2045."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherry jus, coq au vin, beef bourguignon, wild mushroom risotto, or a washed-rind cheese like Époisses.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Gevrey-Chambertin profile: dark cherry and black raspberry with earthy, savoury notes and a touch of spice, framed by the toast and vanilla of new French oak. Typically medium- to full-bodied, with fresh acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and structured. This is a Premier Cru built to age.
