Furst, Spatburgunder Burgstadter, 2023

Burgstadter wine designation indicates Spätburgunder from Bürgstadt's vineyard sources—a single-village expression from Fürst's home terroir. At two years old, this 2023 vintage shows the distinctive character that comes from Bürgstadt's warm, sheltered microclimate—riper fruit than the cool Mosel or Nahe, yet the acidity and structure characteristic of serious German Pinot Noir. Fürst's minimal-intervention approach emphasizes the wine's natural character. For those seeking to understand German Spätburgunder's potential, this wine demonstrates why Franken offers values and quality deserving more attention. Expected arrival February 26.

Robert Parker

94 points

"Deep, intense and coolish as well as savory aromas on the complex and layered, very elegant and pretty unique nose opens Fürst's 2023 Spätburgunder Bürgstadter that shows ripe dark cherry and dark berry aromas intertwined with earthy and toasty notes. Less sweet and charming compared to the Klingenberger, the Bürgstadter is very dense, round and likewise juicy on the palate but also tightly and persistently structured, developing an intense, very sustainable and aromatic as well as saline and tensioned, if not dramatic finish. This is one of the finest and most complex village wines in all of Germany, and its finish is spectacular in its seriously structured intensity. 13% stated alcohol." —Stephan Reinhardt

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
