All roads lead to Vajra, and this is a chance to walk through the house's front door with a 2008 that has already spent many years in bottle. Albe is the family's tribute to traditional Barolo and to its "Maestri," the masters of tradition: a classic-style Barolo of pure Nebbiolo, blended from three vineyards at different altitudes and exposures. Those sites sit high, between 380 and 480 meters around the hamlet of Vergne. That's the far western corner of the Barolo commune, where the Langhe hills meet the Alps. The name means "dawns." Because the blocks face different ways, the family says they see three sunrises there every day. Aldo Vajra started farming organically in 1971, while he was still a university student, which made him one of the first in Piedmont to do it. If you've only met Albe young and full of energy, an older bottle like this is the way to find out where it goes. Stand it upright for a day and pour it carefully.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2008 Barolo Albe is flat-out delicious. The Albe has often been a big step below the flagship Barolo Bricco delle Viole, but not in 2008. Although softer and rounder than that wine, there is plenty of vintage character in this vibrant, beautifully articulated Barolo. Sweet dark cherries, incense, licorice and tobacco are all wrapped around a pliant finish. The 2008 is accessible even today, and is a great - and I mean great - introductory Barolo for the year." —Antonio Galloni

"The rose, strawberry and cherry aromas and flavors are beautifully displayed on the elegant frame in this pure and delicately wrought red, which shows harmony and depth. The fine lingering finish expresses energy, with a mineral element. Best from 2015 through 2032. Tasted twice, with consistent notes."

More about G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra traces back to 1968, when Aldo Vajra inherited his grandparents' farm in Vergne, the highest village in Barolo. He was a pioneer of organic viticulture in Piedmont—certified in 1971, decades before it became fashionable. His Langhe Nebbiolo showcases the grape at its most approachable, fermented naturally, aged in neutral oak.

Tasting Profile

Expect a classic, high-elevation Barolo: perfumed red cherry, violets and dried herbs over tar and earth. It's typically on the elegant side for the appellation, with fresh acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and savoury. With bottle age, Barolo in this style usually picks up leather, truffle and dried fruit as the tannins soften.
