All roads lead to Vajra, and in 2012 the family bottled this Barolo from the celebrated Ravera cru in Novello, a high, limestone-rich site (around 380 meters) farmed with 30-to-60-year-old vines. Ravera gives Vajra a more structured, mineral and savory counterpoint to their home vineyards. The 2012 was a balanced, classically styled vintage, neither blockbuster nor light. At well over a decade it has settled into a mature, harmonious window and is drinking well now; a decant still helps.

More about G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra traces back to 1968, when Aldo Vajra inherited his grandparents' farm in Vergne, the highest village in Barolo. He was a pioneer of organic viticulture in Piedmont—certified in 1971, decades before it became fashionable. His Langhe Nebbiolo showcases the grape at its most approachable, fermented naturally, aged in neutral oak.
