Maxime Cheurlin took over his family's Vosne-Romanee domaine in 2010 at the age of twenty and turned it into one of the Cote de Nuits' hardest tickets, which makes this Beaune Premier Cru -- bought in 2016, and the estate's only holding outside its home turf -- by far the most gettable wine he makes. Les Tuvilains is a 0.68-hectare parcel at the southern end of Beaune on brown clay and marl, planted in 1983, farmed sustainably alongside the domaine's many pre-war vines. Cheurlin prefers infusion to extraction: fully destemmed fruit, a few days of cool maceration before native yeasts get going, then eighteen to twenty months in barrel, about 30% new, bottled unfined and unfiltered. 2022's hot, dry summer could have gone badly, but the vines coped and the wines came in ripe and generous with unexpected freshness. Lovely now; better still in three or four years.
