The precise one. La Côte comes from La Grande Côte, one of Chavignol's three named crus — a south to southeast-facing hillside on chalky Kimmeridgian terre blanche — and it is the most linear, tightly drawn wine in Gérard Boulay's range. Where his Comtesse is broad and powerful off the warm base of Monts Damnés, this one trades weight for clarity and tension. The 2017 shows both sides: fleshy and full from the site's late-picked fruit, then pulled taut by fine acidity and mineral notes that land somewhere between struck flint and iodine. Vinified and aged in three- and four-year-old barrels, it is an expression of terroir rather than varietal character — Sauvignon Blanc as a vehicle for limestone. Drinking beautifully now with plenty of air, and it will hold for years.
