Sciaccarellu (sha-ka-REL-oo) is extremely rare in Patrimonio, and that rarity is the whole point of 'Sempre Cuntentu', which is Corsican for "always happy." Patrimonio reds have to be built on Niellucciu, so the Giacomettis bottle their Sciaccarellu as humble Vin de France. Think of it as a rule-breaker wearing an everyday label. The family farms on the edge of the Agriates Desert, an empty, rugged stretch of northern Corsica with no towns, one paved road and a single hamlet. You need a 4x4 to reach the vines. The hot, dry Libecciu wind blows there all year, and the vines have to be plowed constantly so their roots dig deep for water. Christian Giacometti, who founded the estate in 1987, has been handing over to his daughter Sarah and son Simon, and their Sciaccarellu experiments are a big part of what makes this house worth following. The farming is organic. This is the cheerful side of a serious Patrimonio estate, just as the name promises.

More about Giacometti

Corsica has a reputation for being off the beaten path. For being wild. For being different. Corsica stands out in the world of wine.

And Domaine Giacometti stands out in the world of Corsica. This becomes obvious just trying to get to the estate. You leave the other domaines behind, leave the highway, and take your 4X4 across rugged country to get there.

The terroir is also exceptional: a unique combination of granite and desert with a local wind that blows through the valley so hot and dry it's got its own name in the local dialect: Libecciu.

Nothing else grows around there. Just vines, with roots that dig deep, deep, deep for sustenance.

Aside from a tiny amount of Grenache, Giacometti grows only two grape varieties, both of which—and we couldn't have said said this even two or three years ago—you probably know. There's a straight Sciaccarellu, which makes an extremely drinkable Vin de France from vines grown in the sandy/granite soils.

And there is an almost straight (97%) Niellucciu, which makes a wine that qualifies as Patrimonio, even though the domaine is far from other producers in the AOC. It, too, is a wine made for drinking and simple pleasure. They are both fresh and delicious expressions of pure Corsican varieties grown in a terroirs so unique that they stand out even in the rugged slopes of Corsica.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Corsican charcuterie such as figatellu and coppa; grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic; roast chicken with olives and herbs; pasta with sausage and tomato sauce.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Sciaccarellu profile: wild strawberry and red cherry, a signature twist of white pepper and the herbal, scrubby lift of Corsican maquis. Typically light to medium in body, with fine, gentle tannins and bright acidity, it finishes dry, fresh and a little savoury. Think of a Pinot Noir with a peppery, sun-warmed edge.
