Cascina Francia is the heart of Giacomo Conterno, the great Serralunga d'Alba vineyard the family bought in 1974 and the source of their flagship Barolos. This 2009 in magnum is mature, traditional Barolo from one of Piedmont's most revered estates, made with the long aging and uncompromising approach the name stands for. The magnum format means it's evolving slowly and has plenty of road ahead. This is a wine for a special occasion. Decant well in advance and give it the time it deserves.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"Good bright medium red. Deep, expressive nose offers strawberry, camphor, marzipan and earthy minerality. Like liquid silk on entry, then very rich, ripe and sweet in the middle, offering complex notes of red berries, roasted herbs, leather and smoked meat. Finishes sappy and very long, with lush tannins and serious breadth. The tannins are more than supported by the wine's strong mid-palate material. This wine includes the fruit that would normally go into the Monfortino bottling." —Stephen Tanzer

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

Tasting Profile

Dried cherry, tar, rose petal, leather and tobacco. Full-bodied, powerful and structured, with firm tannins and lifted acidity. Very long finish. Still has years ahead.
