Barolo's most famous cru, in traditional hands. Giacomo Fenocchio is an unsung traditionalist where Claudio Fenocchio ages everything in large Slavonian casks and bottles each site separately for true terroir transparency. Cannubi, in the commune of Barolo itself, is the region's most storied vineyard, prized for producing perfumed, elegant, harmonious Nebbiolo. The 2013 was a glorious, structured classic vintage Flatiron flagged as the one to reveal this estate's full potential. Now maturing, it's drinking well with a decant and has plenty of life left.

Antonio Galloni

84 points

"Fenocchio's 2013 Barolo Cannubi offers reasonably good mid-palate depth, with good aromatic lift and decent balance. Overall, though, the 2013 is short, compact and uninspiring, especially considering the vaunted site from which it emerges. The dried out fruit suggests the 2013 is an early drinker." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

92 points

"Here's a wine of depth and intensity. The 2013 Barolo Cannubi starts relatively slowly with mounting aromas of forest berry, crushed mineral and savory tobacco. It reaches full regime after a few moments in the glass and shows pretty aromatic layering all the while. The finish is dry and firm, although the tannins are already well integrated within the flesh of the wine. Only 3,500 bottles were produced." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

17 points

"Barolo. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Mid to dark ruby with orange tinges. More depth on the nose than most Cannubi wines so far. Focused palate with plenty of fruit perfectly matched by fine, coating tannins. Impressive balance and concentration." —Walter Speller

Kerin O'Keefe

93 points

"Rose, blue flower, perfumed berry and chopped mint aromas set the tone on this vibrant red. Elegant and linear, the luminous palate delivers red cherry, pomegranate, white pepper and clove. Firm, refined tannins provide structure and poise. It’s youthfully austere but already balanced, with bright acidity. Drink 2023–2038." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Giacomo Fenocchio

Five generations of Fenocchios have been making wine from their Barolo holdings since 1894. Giacomo took over in 1964 and expanded the estate, then passed the torch to his son Claudio in 1989. They own four prized Cru plots—Bussia, Villero, Castellero, Cannubi—and make Barolo the traditional way: long maceration, no roto-fermentors, only indigenous methods that speak terroir.

Tasting Profile

Maturing, perfumed Nebbiolo: red cherry, rose, tar and tea leaf. Full-bodied but elegant, fine firm tannins, fresh acidity. Drinking now, will keep.
