Manzone's flagship cru in one of Barolo's great modern vintages, now twenty-five years old and drinking at the top of its arc. Le Gramolere is a steep, southwest-facing slope at around 350 meters in Monforte d'Alba, on stony, sandy calcareous marl rich in stones and fossils: poor ground that keeps yields low and hands the wine its tannic spine and its longevity. The Manzone family has worked this hill since the late nineteenth century and made wine at Ciabot del Preve since 1925; today's Giovanni, named for his grandfather, works alongside his son Mauro and daughter Mirella, and nothing about the method has wandered from tradition, with fermentations of thirty to forty-five days on the skins, gentle extraction, roughly thirty months in 500- to 700-liter Slavonian casks, no new French oak and no fining or filtration. What this cru gives is rich cherry fruit held under real tension, and 2001, a year that delivered ripeness and structure at once, brings both in full. This bottle comes from a private cellar. Stand it upright for a day, decant an hour ahead, and drink it over the next decade.

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"Full red. Expressive aromas of raspberry, rose petal, brown spices, nuts and cedary oak. Sweet, spicy and fresh, with lush fruit lifted by pungent cinnamon and mace. The firmly tannic finish hints at leather and meat, but this wine comes across as distinctly less rustic than the 2000 example." —Stephen Tanzer

Wine Spectator

95 points

"Gorgeous aromas of ripe fruit, spices and light cedar. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. This is balanced and wonderfully made, with great concentration. Great value too."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, tajarin with butter and white truffle, roast guinea hen with sage, or a board of aged Castelmagno and Parmigiano.

Tasting Profile

Dried rose, sour cherry, tar, tobacco leaf and orange peel, with the mushroomy, savory notes that come with age. Medium-full and firm rather than heavy, with bright acidity and fine tannin that still grips. The finish is long, savory and faintly bitter in the classic Barolo way.
