A straight Monforte d'Alba Barolo from a vintage that gave Piedmont vibrant acidity and genuine staying power, now eighteen years on and sitting in a very good place. Rocca Giovanni is a three-generation family estate with twenty-two hectares in Monforte, southeast-facing, farmed with eco-friendly treatments in the vineyard; Giovanni runs it with his wife Caterina, their son Maurizio and daughter-in-law Ilaria. This is the estate's commune-level Barolo rather than one of its single crus, which is a fair way into Monforte's signature: deep-colored, cherry-driven wine where the fruit carries as much weight as the structure. The freshness of 2008 has kept it energetic while the tannins have settled into place. From a private cellar. Stand it upright for a day, decant half an hour ahead, and drink it over the next several years.
