A 1.5L museum piece from a pivotal moment in the Mascarello family's history. 1970 was the year Mauro Mascarello (who had taken over from father Giuseppe in 1967) made the family's first-ever single-vineyard bottling from their Monprivato cru. This wine, labeled simply 'Castiglione Falletto,' represents the older tradition the family had practiced for generations: blending Monprivato fruit with grapes from other sites in the village to make a single classical Barolo. 1970 was a structured classical vintage, and 55 years on in magnum this is a piece of Piedmont winemaking history from the cusp of the modern single-vineyard era. The slow-aging format only deepens the spell.

More about Giuseppe Mascarello

Giuseppe Mascarello's origins trace to 1881 in Monforte d'Alba, now representing over 130 years of Barolo tradition. Mauro Mascarello and his son Giuseppe avoid new French oak entirely, aging in decades-old Slavonian oak botti purchased in the 1950s. These are classically-made Barolos—Monprivato is the crown jewel—that taste like the region's soul distilled into a bottle.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast capon with chestnut stuffing, brasato al Barolo, white-truffle tajarin, roast pheasant with porcini, agnolotti del plin, or aged Castelmagno. A Sunday-lunch wine for a museum-piece table.

Tasting Profile

Tertiary classical Barolo: dried rose, dried cherry, leather, forest floor, balsamic herbs, dried mushroom and a layer of orange peel. Tannins long since silken; magnum format keeps the perfume lifted and the finish slow.
