A 1995 Monprivato in magnum, and the fact that it exists at all tells you something: the Mascarellos bottle this cru under its own numbered label only in vintages they judge exceptional or excellent. Lesser years go into the regular Barolo or into Langhe Nebbiolo. Monprivato is a six-hectare sorì (a south-facing hillside) in Castiglione Falletto, in the centre of the Barolo zone. It sits mid-slope at 280 metres, faces south-west and grows on clayey-silty Miocene marl rich in active limestone. It has been on the land registry as a vineyard since 1666, and in 1985 Renato Ratti, the Langhe's great historian, named it one of Barolo's eleven first-category historic sites. Maurizio Mascarello bought in here in 1904 and first planted the Michét strain of Nebbiolo in 1921. Today the family owns nearly all of the vineyard (a small parcel low on the hill belongs to Giovanni Sordo, so it's not quite a monopole). This vintage came just after the family began setting aside a separate Michét Riserva, Cà d'Morissio, first released with the 1993. The house has never gone in for new French oak and still ages in the Slavonian casks Giuseppe Mascarello bought in the late 1950s, so if you want Barolo made the old way from one of its most storied hillsides, in the slow-ageing magnum format, this is the real thing.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"The 1995 Barolo Monprivato (magnum) is superb. Dense and powerful in the glass, it offers up copious black cherry/plum fruit, gravel, smoke, tobacco and leather. Still a bit burly, the 1995 has finally started to soften, although some burliness remains in the tannins. Its virile, youthful intensity makes it one of the most pleasant surprises of the evening." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

87 points

"This traditional producer has turned out a 1995 Barolo Monprivato with earthy, truffle, licorice, and dusty black cherry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with good ripeness, excellent purity, and a nicely extracted, rustic, generous style, it is already accessible, yet promises to last for 10-12 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Giuseppe Mascarello

Giuseppe Mascarello's origins trace to 1881 in Monforte d'Alba, now representing over 130 years of Barolo tradition. Mauro Mascarello and his son Giuseppe avoid new French oak entirely, aging in decades-old Slavonian oak botti purchased in the 1950s. These are classically-made Barolos—Monprivato is the crown jewel—that taste like the region's soul distilled into a bottle.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic, traditionally made Barolo: sour cherry, dried flowers, tar and a savoury, earthy edge, with ageing in large old Slavonian casks keeping the fruit pure rather than oaky. It's firmly structured, with high acidity and grippy tannins. With bottle age, Nebbiolo like this typically moves toward leather, truffle and forest floor, finishing long and dry.
