The Mascarellos only bottle Monprivato in vintages they judge outstanding or excellent. In lesser years the fruit goes into the normal Barolo or gets sold as Langhe Nebbiolo, so the fact that a 2003 exists at all is the family's own verdict on the year. Monprivato is a mid-slope site of about six hectares in Castiglione Falletto. It shows up as a vineyard in land records from 1666, the family has owned it since 1904, and people often call it "the Musigny of Barolo." It faces south-west at 280 meters with nothing nearby to block the sun, and the vines grow in blue-grey marine marl that's high in active limestone. The house is firmly old guard: slow fermentations, no new French oak, and long ageing in Slavonian oak casks the family bought in the 1950s. This is a chance to drink one of Barolo's great vineyards with real age on it.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2003 Barolo Monprivato (magnum) is one of the real surprises of the night. Rich and textured in the glass, with striking vibrancy, the 2003 is positively stellar. Soaring floral and spice notes extend the mid-palate and finish. From magnum, the 2003 Monprivato is sublime. It's very clearly the most impressive wine in this first flight. What a fabulous showing." —Antonio Galloni

"This cru is one of the best 10 vineyards in the entire zone. He uses extremely big botte. Much lighter than the 2004s with quite a brickish rim. (He still has some of the Rose clone of Nebbiolo, which explains the light colour.) Franco Ziliani says most 2003s are developing much faster than this – but this seems gorgeous already to me. Light, rather floral, rosy nose, rather winning! Very rich start – lovely and utterly flattering. The tannins are very nicely covered. Lots of lively, heel-kicking fruit. Hint of chestnuts on the finish but the traditional ways of Mascarello are not difficult to love in this example. Quite different from the 2004s but a really lovely wine." —Jancis Robinson MW

More about Giuseppe Mascarello

Giuseppe Mascarello's origins trace to 1881 in Monforte d'Alba, now representing over 130 years of Barolo tradition. Mauro Mascarello and his son Giuseppe avoid new French oak entirely, aging in decades-old Slavonian oak botti purchased in the 1950s. These are classically-made Barolos—Monprivato is the crown jewel—that taste like the region's soul distilled into a bottle.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle, beef braised in Barolo, roast pheasant or guinea fowl, aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic traditional Barolo profile: red cherry, violet and tar, with dried herbs and the perfumed elegance that Castiglione Falletto's limestone-rich marl is known for. Long ageing in old Slavonian casks keeps the fruit pure rather than oaky, with firm tannins and bright acidity. Mature examples add leather, truffle and forest floor to a long, savoury finish.
