Founded in 1881 and now led by Mauro Mascarello with daughter Elena, Giuseppe Mascarello practices "enlightened traditionalism"—allowing brilliant terroir to take center stage. Monprivato, purchased by Mauro's grandfather in 1904, ranks among Barolo's ten greatest vineyards: 15 acres of white and gray marl on a southwest-facing slope in Castiglione Falletto. Ca' d'Morissio represents an ultra-premium selection from a 2-acre section replanted in 1983 using the old Michét clone from 1921—a late-ripening, low-yielding clone uniquely adapted to this site. Production is roughly 4,000 bottles or fewer. The wine ages in old Slavonian oak botti purchased in the 1950s. The 2016 is exceptional: an epic growing season produced wines of remarkable energy and depth. Drink now through 2036.

"The last time we saw this wine was in 2014, and I remember that vintage as magical. The Giuseppe Mascarello 2016 Barolo Monprivato Riserva Cà d'Morissio is the estate's benchmark wine. Thanks to this epic growing season, we have a clear window onto the excellence of Castiglione Falletto, where Monprivato is located, and the current state of affairs at this historic winery. I found this wine to be quite beautiful and profound, with dried fruit, cassis, earthy tones and pressed violet. It is also quite generous in terms of mouthfeel, with integrated tannins that are finely woven with hints of dried mint and bitter plum. The vineyards were planted with a massal selection of Mascarello family vines. The wine is persistent, especially at the back end of the palate, showing firm structure and power." —Monica Larner

More about Giuseppe Mascarello

Giuseppe Mascarello's origins trace to 1881 in Monforte d'Alba, now representing over 130 years of Barolo tradition. Mauro Mascarello and his son Giuseppe avoid new French oak entirely, aging in decades-old Slavonian oak botti purchased in the 1950s. These are classically-made Barolos—Monprivato is the crown jewel—that taste like the region's soul distilled into a bottle.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

VineyardIn 1983, having made several great Barolos from Monprivato, Mauro began replanting a two-acre section of the vineyard, using a Nebbiolo clone originally planted in Monprivato in 1921 by his grandfather Morissio. Mauro theorized that this clone—of the Michét subvariety had become uniquely adapted to the Monprivato terroir. Mauro’s goal was to produce a super-riserva Barolo called Cà d’Morissio.OrientationSouthwest.SoilCalcareous marl.ViticultureAvg. Tasting Profile

Garnet color with aromas of cherry, leather, tobacco, and mineral. Full body with refined, silky tannins, red fruit and herbal flavors, and a long, complex finish.

Visiting Cantina Giuseppe Mascarello & Figli is in some ways a bit like traveling back in time: the winery is full of ancient, enormous botti, and though the largest casks are no longer in use, the family traditions still reign. Fermentations are slow, in concrete and steel; aging is long, in large oak botti ranging from 20 to 70 years of age. There are no tricks to doll the wines up. Farming decisions are made with an eye not only to the current vintage, but to future generations of Mascarellos.

However visiting Mascarello isn’t just stepping into the past: a visit is being welcomed into a space where you can feel the profound connection between the present and what has come before, the thread that ties today’s Piedmont to its rich and wonderful history.

Elena and her brother, Giuseppe, are the latest Mascarellos to carry the thread forward, and they're doing it beautifully, which shows in the wines. The family has some of Piedmont's greatest terroirs, including Monprivato (often called “the Musigny of Barolo”). They do what they need to do to allow those terroirs to shine year after year, in each new vintage’s unique voice.
